The Ruins

This was done as a concept for The Ruins. I loved the book and was really stocked to get a shot at doing the movie poster for it. Rather than showing vines engulfing a person (like what they went with), I wanted to make a more serene image. I wanted to focus on the vine getting inside these people – both physically and mentally. To me, having the girl in this picture quietly accept her fate, is creepier than if she were clawing at it.

For this picture, I combined photos of the flower and the girl from our photo shoot. I used the meat from the Saw 3 posters I did where the big flower is coming out. I painted (in Photoshop) the vines, shadows, and the somewhat pathetically drawn leaf in the middle of her back. The blurry leaves at the bottom are from a photo.

This was done as the key art for Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. It's a combination of photo manipulation and painting in Photoshop. The title treatment was made in Illustrator. The tentacles are illustrated, as is the head hanging in the background.

The rest is photo manipulation, with the exception of Jack's face, which is 50% photo and 50% painted since the model I used in the photo shoot didn't look like the actor from the movie. I kept the models eyes and mouth, photoshopped in the hat, hair and ears, then painted a new nose, beard, neck and eyebrows.

Hope you like it, and thanks for looking!

I did the 2 images in the middle. The first and last positions had already been made as billboards (with slightly different backgrounds). My assignment was to bridge the two existing images into a series showing the symbiote overtaking Spider-man. I combined a few different Spider-man images from the photo-shoot to get the poses I wanted and painted the goo using a Wacom and Photoshop.

I usually ignore the standard 27 X 40 inch poster size when I start on a project. I make a scene that I'm happy with, then figure out how to crop into it. Like the Spider-man peices I've posted combines digital illustration and photo manipulation. Evey charicter is combined from 3-10 pictures, so I could pose them the way I wanted.
